On March 29th 2009, Heathrow’s Concorde Club saw the inaugural event of this brand new society for a cappella singers. As was pointed out by one of the participants – ‘we now have lift off!’.

Over one hundred singers, representing eight a cappella groups (listed below) gathered together for a day of coaching, performing, and singing together with a team of first class educators. On the faculty were: Joanna Forbes, Jonathan Rathbone, Mark Williams and Wendy Nieper,  all former members of The Swingle Singers.

A major part of the day’s activities were two open workshop sessions where two groups were paired with an educator to receive and observe coaching.  Comments from the singers included - ‘ten out of ten’; ‘there was an immediate improvement in our sound’ and ‘totally brilliant and inspiring’. The massed groups working with Jonathan Rathbone on his arrangement of Golden Slumbers was another stimulating experience, particularly when Joanna, Jonathan, Mark and Wendy sang the second verse and chorus as a quartet surrounded by the rest of the listening singers. We can now all claim to have sung with ‘The Swingle Singers’ or at least some of the ex members!

Besides bringing together all types of a cappella groups to share and enjoy this special performing art, another objective of the steering committee was to make this workshop day a launch pad for the new society. It is hoped will go on to facilitate similar, more extensive events, and provide a forum for all aspects of a cappella singing. We have had messages of encouragement from Suzi Digby, Gareth Malone, Ben Parry and Michael Welton on behalf of The Magnets, and the committee is now planning the next event for Spring 2010.
